Varjo XR-4: Premium MR features soon to cost more
Varjo is introducing a new subscription model for its XR-4 headsets starting March 25, 2024. The company announced that certain advanced mixed reality features will only be available with a paid annual subscription of $2,500 per headset.
The "Varjo Base" software will be split into a free version and "Varjo Base Pro". Pro features include chroma key, developer access to passthrough cameras, and 3D reconstruction, among others. As an alternative to the annual subscription, Varjo offers a perpetual license for $5,000.
According to Varjo, owners of an XR-4 headset who purchased their unit before March 25 will retain all previous features. Only new buyers will need to purchase the Pro subscription to use the advanced mixed reality features.
