FACTS

Starting February 20, players can get their hands on Tier One: Direct Action for Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest 2. Developer Niorun Studios has set the Early Access price at $13. While release dates for Playstation VR 2, Pico, and Steam versions remain unconfirmed, the team previously mentioned a target window of Q2 2025.

The initial Early Access release includes sabotage and team deathmatch modes, an arsenal of over twelve weapons with attachments focused on realistic handling, and two maps featuring day and night variants with destructible environments. A progression system for unlocking new abilities and equipment is planned for the near future.

The developers plan to add more game modes in the coming months before the final launch. Niorun Studios is targeting a full release by the end of 2025, promising additional maps, new features, enhanced graphics, and more refined gameplay mechanics.

CONTEXT

Successful Kickstarter campaign

Niorun Studios launched their Kickstarter campaign for Tier One: Direct Action in July 2024. Backers could support the project through pledges ranging from $5 to $5,000 until August 30. The campaign narrowly exceeded its $40,000 funding goal. According to the original Kickstarter timeline, the Early Access version was initially planned for Q3 or Q4 2024 on Meta Quest.

The studio brings together over 20 VR veterans, including eight core team members who previously worked on the popular multiplayer shooter Onward. Many team members come from military backgrounds.

Co-founder Angelika Reich says the team aims to set a new standard for VR FPS games with Tier One. They're focusing on realistic environments and weapon handling, customizable characters and equipment, and immersive gameplay mechanics like climbing ladders and applying bandages.

Niorun Studios cites games like ArmA, Rainbow Six Siege, and their own Onward as key inspirations, considering Tier One a "spiritual successor" to the latter.
