FACTS

PTC Update 71 adds support for casting (live-streaming of native Meta Quest content to a PC screen). Remote Desktop, which can be used to bring the Windows desktop into Quest or Horizon workrooms, is now part of Meta Quest Link and no longer requires the installation of a separate app.

Meta Quest Link can now be used for three things at once: PC VR streaming, casting and remote desktop.

CONTEXT

More significant changes to come?

PTC Update 71 seems to be the biggest update in years, and hopefully a sign that Meta is planning to revamp its outdated PC app. When you connect to a PC via Meta Quest Link, you are still presented with the Oculus Rift's PC VR interface, which dates way back to Meta's PC VR era.

In September 2020, Meta announced that a native PC VR interface is coming to Meta Quest. An Oculus blog post spoke of a "unified system experience that will let Oculus Link users see all their Rift and Quest apps alongside each other". The integration was announced for 2021. Sadly, there has been no word since then.

But VR enthusiast Luna found code in the PTC 71 update that suggests Meta is working on displaying PC VR apps in the native Quest library.

There are two alternative apps for PC VR streaming and remote desktop: the tried and tested Virtual Desktop (paid, but with lots of features and options) and Valve's free Steam Link, which requires no PC separate app other than Steam and is therefore particularly easy to set up.
