Playstation VR 2 has already won at The Game Awards
Five VR titles are nominated for Best VR Game of the Year at the Game Awards. Looking through the titles, one thing stands out.
The Game Awards will take place on December 7, 2023 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. As always, the ceremony will be streamed live on YouTube and other platforms.
Awards will be presented in 31 categories. One of them is Best VR/AR.
Games are nominated by over a hundred international game publications, journalists and influencers. Winners are determined by a blended vote between the voting jury (90%) and public fan voting (10%).
Since new games are announced at the Game Awards every year, it is possible that one or two VR games will be announced as well.
These are the 2023 VR GOTY nominees
This is the tenth anniversary of the Game Awards, and the eighth time VR games have been recognized in their own category.

What is striking about this year's selection is that the nominated titles are almost all PSVR 2 exclusives. The exception is Humanity, which is also available for PC VR headsets in addition to Playstation VR 2, so in a way, Sony has already won. In previous years, the selection was more diverse in terms of platform availability.
One of the biggest VR games of the year still to come
The big exclusive titles of the year are still coming to the Quest platform: Assassin's Creed Nexus VR on November 16th and Asgard's Wrath 2 on December 15th. The PC VR hit of the year, Vertigo 2 (coming to Playstation VR 2 later this year) is also missing, as are multiplatform gems The 7th Guest VR and Vampire: The Masquerade - Justice, which were recently released. Hopefully, some of these titles will make it onto next year's list of nominees.
Two of this year's nominees (Gran Turismo 7 and Resident Evil Village VR) are also VR ports, and one might wonder if the medium is being served by nominating and celebrating titles that can also be played without a VR headset.
By the way, the following VR games have won at The Game Awards in previous years:
- 2022: Moss 2 (Multiplatform)
- 2021: Resident Evil 4 (Quest-exclusive)
- 2020: Half-Life: Alyx (Steam-exclusive)
- 2019: Beat Saber (Multiplatform)
- 2018: Astro Bot (PSVR-exclusive)
- 2017: Resident Evil 7 (PSVR-exclusive)
- 2016: Rez Infinite (Multiplatform)
