Review: We couldn't get Sony's Playstation VR 2 PC adapter to work properly

Poor performance, cumbersome setup and too many cables: In my review, I reveal why Sony's PSVR 2 PC adapter didn't convince me.

A few days ago, Sony released the PSVR 2 PC adapter, which is designed to allow owners of the Playstation VR 2 to use it on their PC. I took a close look at the device and report on my experiences.

  • Important note: Due to technical reasons, we are not able to give Sony's adapter a final review. We decided to publish the review in this form because we have found many reports of similar problems over the past few days. If we manage to solve the technical problems, we will extend this review accordingly.

Missing an important cable and Bluetooth

As soon as I unpacked the PSVR 2 PC Adapter, I was struck by all the things that were not included: There is no DisplayPort 1.4 cable, which is essential for connecting to a PC. Sony's PC adapter also lacks built-in Bluetooth functionality. I have to connect the Sense Controllers to the PC separately. If your computer doesn't have built-in Bluetooth, you'll need an additional Bluetooth adapter.

Connecting the controllers to the PC via Bluetooth worked well in my tests. However, there are numerous reports online from users who had less luck. Issues can occur if the Bluetooth adapter is too old or in an awkward position. If you don't have a high-quality external Bluetooth adapter, you can expect connection problems.

With a total of two cables to the PC, another cable to the power outlet and the connection to the PSVR 2 headset, the connection is as cumbersome as it was in the PSVR 1 days. A clear step backwards.

Disappointing software and performance

Let's move on to my biggest criticism of Sony's PSVR 2 PC adapter: despite hours of trial and error with different settings, reinstalling drivers and changing hardware, the massive stuttering persisted. I wasn't able to complete the initial setup of the headset within Sony's PSVR 2 Steam app until the very end.

After several attempts, I was able to set the playable area, but the stuttering got so bad that I had to give up for the time being. Even after several hours, I still couldn't try a VR game.

This makes the PSVR 2 PC adapter unusable for me in its current form.

Preliminary verdict: Potential not fully exploited

Overall, I have to draw a rather sobering conclusion about the PSVR 2 PC Adapter after my first tests. The implementation seems immature and not well-thought-out. Why doesn't Sony include all the necessary cables? Why is there no integrated Bluetooth connection in the box? I would have expected more from an adapter that costs $60.

The biggest problem, however, is the massive performance problems caused by the software. Sony urgently needs to make improvements here. Otherwise, the product will simply not be usable for some users. It's a shame because the adapter definitely has potential for owners of a powerful gaming PC and a PSVR 2 — even if the most important features of the PSVR 2 are missing on the PC. Hopefully, the teething issues will be fixed with future software updates. Until then, it's a case of: Wait and see!
