Luke Ross surprised his Patreon backers a Christmas present. He released a major update for his R.E.A.L. VR mods that for the first time delivers high-quality images with DLSS enabled.

The following games benefit from the update:

  • Atomic Heart
  • Elden Ring (including Shadow of the Erdtree DLC)
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (New)
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • Ghostrunner
  • Ghostwire: Tokyo
  • High On Life
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Star Wars Outlaws
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
  • Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

In a Patreon post, he describes what the DLSS fix, which is "based on a series of approximations, heuristics and a real-time reconstruction of missing data," can and cannot do.

The biggest benefit, of course, is that the image quality is now very good, even in DLSS performance mode, and the solution requires no additional processing power. "Together with the FOV optimizations, this means that for the very first time it's becoming possible to play a game in VR with essentially the same image quality that you would get in 2D," writes Ross. Another plus is that his solution is more or less universal and easy to implement for new games.

On the downside, Ross points out that only owners of Nvidia graphics cards that support DLSS will benefit from the new software and some scenes can show artifacts. However, if the solution does not work as desired in certain places, it can be turned off.

A second Christmas present came in the form of a VR mod for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which also benefits from the DLSS fix.
