Meta's CTO Andrew Bosworth writes in his annual year in review and outlook that he is confident the coming year will be the most important in Reality Labs' history. Meta's VR/AR division celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2024.

The reason for Bosworth's optimism is that the company's own mixed reality hardware (Quest 3/3S) and AI glasses (Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses) have reached a level of maturity that allows Meta to accelerate software development from here.

In the same blog post, Bosworth shared some interesting details about Meta Quest 3S and Meta's VR ecosystem:

  • "Sales were strong over the Black Friday weekend, and we’re expecting a surge of people activating their new headsets over the holiday break."
  • "There’s been a significant influx of younger people in particular, and they have been gravitating toward social and competitive multiplayer games, as well as freemium content."
  • "We’re seeing similar trends with new Quest 3S users spending more time in Horizon Worlds, making it a Top 3 immersive app for Quest 3S [...]."

That Horizon Worlds has moved from the top 10 to the top 3 Quest apps is not a big surprise, as Meta is taking every opportunity to point users to the app, whether in the headset or in the new companion app.

Meta Quest 3S successfully expands the ecosystem

  • "Quest 3S was designed to bring more people into the Quest ecosystem and be a very exciting gift to give or to get. It’s working - it has a high proportion of purchasers who are new-to-Quest."
  • "Some cool milestones: Usage of the YouTube app on Quest has risen by 20% since the launch of Quest 3S, while GorillaTag crossed $100M in revenue this year, went from 1 developer to team over 50, and 3 million monthly users."
  • "As new users come in with new interests/needs, we’re ensuring they 1/ see the magic of MR 2/ stick around for a long time. So we’re funding devs to build a now broader range of apps that users want: social gaming, entertainment, free-to-play, core gaming, and MR-first."

Despite reports to the contrary, Meta does not appear to be planning a major change in strategy for funding XR projects and will continue to invest in a wide range of applications.
