The original Red Matter gets an impressive visual overhaul on Quest 3
After the graphics update for Quest 3 and 3S, Red Matter now looks almost as impressive as its successor.
We missed it amidst the launch of Quest 3S and Batman: Arkham Shadow, but we're making up for it now: Red Matter received a major visual upgrade last week that improves many aspects of its graphics.
Vertical Robot has implemented 4K textures, bringing them up to the level of the PSVR 2 version, with up to a 16x increase in pixel count. It has also enabled 8x anisotropic filtering, which improves the sharpness of textures when viewed from extreme angles. Another major improvement is the dynamic shadows, which add depth to objects and atmosphere to scenes. Finally, Vertical Robot has implemented HD meshes so that objects should look almost as realistic as in the PSVR 2 version.
The PSVR 2 version of Red Matter released a year ago with enhanced graphics, which Quest 3 now also benefits from.
A significant improvement
I played the first half hour of Red Matter again and can say that the game has closed a large part of the gap in graphical fidelity to Red Matter 2.
The textures are crisp, and the objects look real to the touch. The dynamic shadows are only rendered with certain light sources, such as the flashlight, but are beautiful to look at and add a lot to the visual credibility and atmosphere of the world.
The graphics wizards at Vertical Robot have done an impressive job with the update. Anyone who owns a Quest 3 or 3S will experience the VR game at its best.
You can purchase Red Matter for $25 in the Horizon Store. Quest 2 and Pro are also supported.
