Civilization VII will also be released in a VR and MR version developed exclusively for Quest 3 and 3S.
Firaxis Games and 2K announced "Civilization VII - VR" for Meta Quest 3 and 3S. The first Civilization for VR headsets is being developed by Playside, the studio behind Dumb Ways Free for All and the mixed reality game Shattered, which we've praised in our hands-on.
The VR and MR versions of the game are identical in content to the PC and console versions, but offer a different perspective on the game as well as unique VR and MR features.
Civilization VII - VR uses the classic top-down view and places you at the command table, a board-like construction that brings the world to life before your eyes. You can look up at the command table to plan your moves, or lean down to see the intricacies of your scouts, cities, armies, and wonders. In virtual reality, you sit in an environment that mirrors the historical setting. When you switch to mixed reality, the command table adapts to your position in physical space.
Diplomacy and interaction are an important part of the game series, and in Civilization VII - VR you have the opportunity to have those diplomatic conversations face-to-face. The other leaders in the game surround the command table. This allows you to see their actions and reactions as you make your moves, form alliances, and wage war. You can also relive your history and achievements in the Archives, a room where the highlights of your civilization are saved as dioramas.
The default games run at a faster pace than the PC version of the game, allowing you to play through an entire era in a single headset session. However, the speed can be adjusted to your liking.
Civilization VII - VR supports a single player mode as well as co-op and competitive multiplayer for up to four players simultaneously, with optional AI opponents. Your friends will appear at the command table as their chosen leaders. Multiplayer requires a 2K account.
While Civilization VII will be released on February 11, 2025 for a variety of conventional platforms, VR fans will have to wait a little longer. The VR and MR port is coming Meta Quest 3 and 3S in the spring of 2025.
You can already add Civilization VII - VR to your wishlist on the Horizon Store.
