Popular Doom 2 Mod gets VR treatment: Total Chaos is coming this July

Crafting, survival horror and a dark Doom atmosphere: Total Chaos promises an intense VR experience.
A beloved horror mod is getting new life in virtual reality, as Trigger Happy Interactive and Apogee Entertainment have announced their reimagining of Total Chaos. The game, which started life as a Doom 2 mod in 2018, will launch on July 24th with both a full version rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 and an epilogue DLC. Most intriguingly, players will be able to experience its horrors in VR.
While the developers haven't specified which VR platforms will support Total Chaos, a PC VR version seems likely given the game's planned Steam release. Details about the virtual reality implementation remain under wraps for now.
Crafting, survival horror and a dark atmosphere
The game's story unfolds across nine chapters, taking players into the depths of Fort Oasis, a once-thriving coal mining town now reduced to ruins. Following a mysterious radio signal, players descend into abandoned mines, where reality begins to blur with madness. The psychological horror experience emphasizes survival and resource management, forcing players to craft weapons from scavenged materials to fend off the horrors that lurk in the darkness.
The developers have outlined several core elements that define the Total Chaos experience:
- A rich horror setting: Players piece together the story through cryptic notes, unsettling encounters, and environmental storytelling spread across nine chapters.
- Survival mechanics: An extensive inventory system forces careful resource management, while crafting mechanics let players create and upgrade weapons from found materials.
- Diverse combat: Players face off against disfigured monsters using both firearms and melee weapons, with each creature presenting unique threats and attack patterns.
Total Chaos first captured players' attention in 2018 as a total conversion mod for Doom 2, bringing fresh graphics, gameplay elements, and an original story to the classic game engine. The mod's widespread acclaim led Trigger Happy to announce a standalone version last year. For those curious to try it out, a playable demo of the PC version is currently available on Steam.
