With this VR sci-fi shooter, Half-Life: Alyx gets an indie rival on Playstation VR 2
A small indie studio is taking a bold swing at the story-driven VR shooter genre spearheaded by Half-Life: Alyx, with an ambitious new title heading to Playstation VR 2.
Castello Inc., previously known for their arcade VR shooter Ark and Ade, has announced that their upcoming game Of Lies and Rain will be coming to Playstation VR 2. The VR game, which was already slated for Meta Quest and PC VR via Steam, is currently in early testing phases.
Players step into a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has fallen to machines. Guided by a mysterious voice, your mission is to take down an artificial intelligence called "A.D.E." that supposedly triggered humanity's downfall. The journey involves fighting through areas filled with hostile machines and monsters while solving environmental puzzles.
Following Alyx's footsteps
It's hard to miss the similarities to Valve's groundbreaking VR hit Half-Life: Alyx, though on a more modest indie scale. Of Lies and Rain mirrors many of Alyx's core elements: an oppressive atmosphere, explorable environments packed with puzzles, interactive environment, upgrade systems, and varied combat encounters against different enemy types.
The game will debut in Steam Early Access before making its way to Playstation VR 2, allowing the developers to incorporate player feedback before the final release. Early playtesters on Reddit and Discord have praised the game's atmospheric visuals, level design, and core mechanics, though they note some aspects still need polishing.
The PSVR 2 version promises enhanced graphics compared to its Quest counterpart and aims to maintain a steady 90 Hz refresh rate. However, questions remain about the campaign length and whether the combat will remain engaging throughout the full experience. Castello Inc.'s track record includes their well-received VR shooter Ark and Ade, which notably served as a launch title for the Omni One VR treadmill.
