FACTS

Modder Ashok has developed an extensive VR mod for the remake of System Shock, which adds support for 6DOF motion control to the game. This allows you to experience the classic shooter in virtual reality with full range of motion.

The mod includes the following features:

  • 6DOF motion control
  • Gestures for motion controllers
  • Improved object interaction
  • Room scale and physical ducking support
  • Many other bug fixes and improvements for VR

It consists of a UEVR profile and a C++ plugin bundled together. UEVR Nightly 940 or later is required for use. There is also an optional PAK mod that adapts the buttons to the Meta Quest Touch Controller. The link to the VR mod can be found at the end of the article.

CONTEXT

System Shock is considered a milestone in the immersive simulation genre.

The VR mod is currently only available for the PC version of the System Shock remake. However, Flat2VR Studios has already expressed interest in porting the game to Meta Quest 3 or Playstation VR 2, which would require the cooperation of developer studio Nightdive.

System Shock was originally developed by Looking Glass Technologies in 1994, and as a forerunner of the immersive sim genre, influenced the design of many later games such as Deus Ex and BioShock. Set in the year 2072, the story follows an unnamed hacker aboard the Citadel Station as he battles the AI SHODAN.

Despite positive reviews, System Shock was not a commercial success, but retained a loyal fan base. The sequel, System Shock 2, was released in 1999. Developed by Nightdive Studios, the remake combines the gameplay of the original with new HD graphics, updated controls, a revised interface, and new sounds and music.
