Quest 3 gets better passthrough and lying down mode with update v64
Update v64 is rolling out now to Quest headsets and brings big improvements to Meta Quest 3.
System Update 64 is rolling out to Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro headsets from April 8, 2024. As always, it may take up to a week or longer for the update to reach all users.
It brings the following improvements:
- Lying down mode for Quest 3: Enjoy stationary VR and media while lying down. Lying mode was introduced to Quest 2 and Quest Pro in System Update 63. Now, the feature is making its way to Quest 3 and can be found in the Settings under Experimental Features. Once enabled, simply press and hold the Meta button while lying down to calibrate your view for use while lying down.
- Improved passthrough for Quest 3: Meta has improved both resolution and image quality (color, contrast, exposure, dynamic range). The higher resolution should make it easier to see details and smaller text such as smartphone notifications. Meta has also reduced graininess in less than ideal lighting conditions.
- External microphone support for Quest 3: This feature allows you to use an external microphone by plugging it into the Quest 3's USB-C port (or using a USB-C adapter). The option can be found in the Settings under Experimental Features.
- Continuous casting: When casting to your smartphone via the Meta Quest app, casting will no longer be interrupted when you remove the Quest headset.
- Easy meeting of friends in Meta Horizon Worlds: If your friend is online with their location shared and in a public world, you can join them directly from the People app on the universal menu.
The latest update almost exclusively benefits Quest 3, and this may increase in the future as Meta focuses more and more on the next-generation device.
I have already reported on the improved passthrough and will write an article about my impressions as soon as I get the update. It's nice to see Meta improving this important element of mixed reality using only software.
