Meta Quest gets new and improved Instagram and Facebook apps
For Meta Quest, new, more user-friendly Quest versions of Facebook and Instagram are rolling out.
At Meta Connect 2024 in October, Mark Zuckerberg announced "new Instagram and Facebook experiences" that let you bring your feeds and reels into mixed reality. The new apps now appear to be rolling out to Quest users.
You can download the new Instagram and new Facebook in the Horizon Store.
I was able to download and try out the new apps. I no longer had to type in my password the first time I accessed them and was able to log in to both services immediately. One less big hurdle compared to the older Instagram and Facebook apps from 2021.
The interface is now clearer and easier to use, but not all features have been adopted, and on one occasion Instagram caused the operating system to freeze. But these are probably teething problems that will be fixed soon. The stylish frosted glass UI for Instagram, which can be seen in official screenshots, was only visible on the login screen and will hopefully be added to the rest of the UI.
In case you didn't know: Messenger and Whatsapp are also available for Meta Quest. Messenger is built into Horizon OS and does not need to be downloaded separately, while Whatsapp is a separate app.
In my hands-on time with Whatsapp, I found it very useful, allowing me to stay in touch with family and friends while wearing the headset. If you use Meta's social networks and instant messengers a lot, you should also download them for Meta Quest.
