Meta Quest's integrated fitness tracker isn't coming back

Meta Quest's Move app is about to be discontinued, and words from the CTO suggest not to hope for a replacement.
Reality Labs head Andrew Bosworth commented on the upcoming discontinuation of the Move fitness tracker in his latest Instagram AMA. The question was why the Move is being discontinued and if a replacement is planned. Here is Bosworth's answer:
"Yeah, this one's a bummer. We have a small but loyal crowd who really uses this app. Unfortunately, it is not enough of a crowd to justify the expense of continuing to maintain it and keep it going. We've done this a couple times recently, and every time we do it, obviously it tremendously affects people in the community who rely on it, who are using it, and that sucks. So I am sorry about that. That is what happened there."
What is Move?
Move was introduced in 2020 and allowed users to track their calories and exercise time across all apps, including VR games, not just fitness apps. The latter now often have their own integrated fitness trackers. Still, the discontinuation is a loss for the platform, VR fitness enthusiast Josef commented on the feature's removal.
The Move fitness tracker will be discontinued on March 31, 2025. After that date, the feature will no longer be available in Meta Quest or the Meta Horizon mobile app, the company announced in an email to all users.
At that time, Meta wrote that Move relies on "legacy technology, which limits our ability to introduce new innovations for Quest users". From Bosworth's statement, we now know that this is a cost-cutting measure and that there are no current plans to replace Move.
This is the second feature to be discontinued in recent months. At the end of 2024, Meta discontinued the VR app Scoreboards, which was used to view and track achievements in Meta Quest. Scoreboards was discontinued for the same reason, and Bosworth expressed his regret without promising a replacement.
As Reality Labs continues to cut costs, we could see more features like this being discontinued.
