FACTS

Another Axiom, the studio behind the VR phenomenon Gorilla Tag, is expanding its portfolio with a new virtual reality experience. After months of closed testing, Orion Drift enters open Early Access next week, bringing its unique movement mechanics to a space-themed multiplayer environment.

Starting Tuesday, February 25, Orion Drift will be available in open Early Access for Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest 2, and Quest Pro users.

CONTEXT

From monkeys to robots: A new direction for arm-based locomotion

The studio first teased the Orion Drift last summer before launching a closed Early Access phase in September 2024. The new game builds on Another Axiom's expertise in arm-based movement systems, but trades jungle environments for a sprawling space station. Players control robots and can explore multiple zones offering different game modes, with the station supporting up to 200 simultaneous players.

Building on unprecedented VR success

Another Axiom's trajectory into this new venture follows remarkable achievements with Gorilla Tag. As of June 2024, the free-to-play game reports over 1 million daily active users, more than 3 million monthly active users, over 10 million total unique users, an average session length of nearly 60 minutes and revenue exceeding $100 million through microtransactions.

The game has also set new benchmarks in the Meta Quest Store, becoming the first VR title to surpass 100,000 ratings. It currently maintains 115,000 ratings on the platform. Gorilla Tag has emerged as a virtual playground and social hub, particularly popular among younger users. These "VR natives" represent a significant and growing demographic in virtual reality — a trend that has created both opportunities and challenges for traditional VR developers.
