A Quest store listing hints at Meta's plans for VR cloud streaming

Meta has been secretly working on a cloud streaming service for PC VR games for years. Now there is a new sign of life.

FACTS

A VR app called Avalanche has appeared in the Horizon Store, and Meta is listed as the developer.

Avalanche refers to a cloud streaming service that has been in development at Meta for several years and could one day bring PC VR games to Meta Quest without the need for a dedicated computer.

The listing says the app was released on July 24, 2024. The store listing features, among other things, screenshots from Meta's 2017 PC VR game Lone Echo. The app's description reads:

"Download to test out the latest cloud streamed titles on Avalanche."

Unfortunately, you can't download the app, you can only add it to your wish list. You can find the store listing here.

CONTEXT

The store listing could be an indication that Meta is preparing to launch the service.

Meta recently released a demo called Hyperscape, which appears to use Avalanche technology. Hyperscape relies on cloud streaming to display photorealistic environments in Quest headsets, but only in the US.

The first reference to Avalanche appeared in 2022, and since then, the evidence has been mounting. Meta itself never announced Avalanche, and Meta's Jason Rubin said in 2020 that VR cloud streaming was more than five years away.

Even if the Avalanche service launches soon, it's not clear in which regions and at what price.
