Meta confirms that F2P apps dominate time spent on Quest

Meta says that free-to-play apps are now accounting for over 70% of time spent on Meta Quest.
Meta cited this figure in a post on X promoting a developer-focused blog post on "Tips for Monetizing In-App Purchases on Horizon".

In the post Meta writes:
"While premium game purchases still make up the biggest share of spending, IAPs have emerged as the fastest growing revenue stream on the Horizon platform. In the past two years, IAPs have seen substantial growth, especially among immersive titles (AR, VR, MR, and XR experiences that transport users into interactive 3D environments). This is also reflected in the fact that we’re seeing a significant shift in time spent on free-to-play apps on the platform."
If you look at the charts of the most played experiences and the weekly top-selling games by revenue, you will find many free-to-play apps in the top positions. Not listed is Meta's own aggressively promoted free-to-play Metaverse platform, Horizon Worlds, which is also one of the top ten most used Quest apps.
The VR gaming industry is changing with lower-than-expected sales of premium apps, resulting in layoffs and studio closures. In light of these upheavals, Meta acknowledged that the ecosystem is shifting to new audiences and urged developers to focus more on the free-to-play model. Meta also said that consumers spent 12 percent more last year than the year before, driven by a significant increase in in-app purchases.
This latest statistic once again confirms the trend in consumer behavior toward free-to-play and in-app-purchases.
