James Cameron to produce exclusive 3D content for Meta Quest

Meta and James Cameron have entered into a multi-year partnership to provide high-quality 3D content for Meta Quest.

Meta and James Cameron's Lightstorm Vision have announced a major partnership. The goal is to jointly produce world-class stereoscopic content for Meta Quest, spanning live sports and concerts, feature films, and TV series featuring big-name IP. The partners also aim to reduce the cost of producing such content.

"Our goal is to make top-tier 3D content more accessible—both for creators to produce and for people to enjoy at home and on the go. Together with Lightstorm Vision, we’ll improve access to 3D production tools across the broader entertainment industry. In addition to co-producing original content, we’ll leverage Lightstorm Vision’s cutting-edge technology and production techniques to revolutionize the creation of stereoscopic media," Meta writes in the Quest blog.

On Instagram, CTO Andrew Bosworth shared pictures of himself and James Cameron visiting Meta's Research labs.

Meta plans to reveal more details about initial projects in the coming months.

Meta lands a major deal

Lightstorm Vision seems to be a new subsidiary of James Cameron's production company Lightstorm Entertainment that specializes in VR and AR. The official website states that Lightstorm Vision is aimed "at new display devices".

This is a big deal for Meta and the VR industry as a whole. James Cameron is a VR pioneer who has been an early adopter of the technology in the production of his films and developed cutting-edge stereoscopic technology for his Avatar films.

The partnership aims to make this technology more accessible. "Lightstorm Vision's dynamic toolset and 3D methodology enable content creators to create stunning 3D images in a cost-effective, non-restrictive environment," Lightstorm Vision states on its website.

Meta has invested much more in interactive VR and AR content than in immersive cinematography. Investments have been limited to supporting a range of documentaries and short movies. The partnership with Lightstorm Vision could herald a new phase in which Meta addresses the lack of immersive content on the production side.

Hopefully, Meta will follow the lead of Apple, which is working with Blackmagic Design to bring a stereoscopic 8K camera to market. With Lightstorm Vision, Meta has the right partner for such a project.
