A forgotten VR gem is celebrating a mixed reality comeback on Meta Quest
The cyberpunk strategy game Augmented Empire is being released with improved graphics and new features for Meta Quest.
VR studio Coatsink has announced that a revamped version of the Oculus Go classic Augmented Empire will be released for Meta Quest 2, 3 and 3S on November 21st.
Augmented Empire plunges you into the dystopian city of New Savannah in 2058, where you control a team of misfits and criminals from a hideout. Your goal: Overthrow the dictatorship of the privileged upper-class and return power to the common people.
Augmented Empire is a turn-based tactical RPG in which you move your team members around the board and select combat actions. Their abilities can be upgraded and overloaded with experience by using implants called augments.
The studio promises a playtime of 10 hours, spanning 26 missions, 6 playable characters and 60 environments.
The improvements to the Quest version include:
- Updated 4K textures on Quest 3 and 2K textures on Quest 2
- Improved dynamic lighting effects for a more beautiful, higher quality and better lit version of the game
- Support for mixed reality and hand tracking
- Improved combat mini-games
- Achievements
Another VR gem returns
Augmented Empire was released for Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Go in 2017 and 2018, and was one of the best VR games for the 3DoF systems.
In my 2018 review of Augmented Empire, I praised the story, presentation, and game mechanics, but found that the game could be a bit more challenging.
After Witchblood and Raccoon Lagoon, Augmented Empire is the third forgotten VR gem to make a comeback in a modern guise on Meta Quest, preserving it for posterity. Thanks to the success of the VR ecosystem, early quality titles like this are being re-released and brought to new audiences.
