FACTS

The 2016 zombie shooter Arizona Sunshine is considered a VR classic. Developer Vertigo Games has now announced a remake of the game, which will be released on October 17, 2024 for Playstation VR 2, PC VR via SteamVR, and Meta Quest 3 and 2.

Arizona Sunshine Remake is being rebuilt from the ground up and will feature improved graphics, new weapons, and state-of-the-art gameplay mechanics, according to the developers.

As in the original, you must fight your way through the zombie infested Arizona desert. The goal is to find more survivors whose voices can be heard over the radio. You fight alone or in co-op with up to three other survivors against hordes of zombies in a post-apocalyptic southwestern USA.

Other features include

  • A new mutilation and gore system that allows zombies to be dismembered in a variety of ways.
  • Treasure hunting and resource management for ammo and supplies as you fight for survival.
  • A complete edition with all previous DLC and updates from the original game.

Arizona Sunshine Remake will be released in a standard version and an upgrade version for owners of the original game. Those who already own the first version will be able to upgrade to the remake at a reduced price.

CONTEXT

Arizona Sunshine: A classic returns

The original Arizona Sunshine from 2016 is one of the classics of modern VR games. In our review, it impressed with its fun and intuitive zombie shooting, cool visuals and soundscape, as well as a decent play time. The story DLCs "Dead Man" and "The Damned", as well as the horde mode, also provided long-lasting entertainment value.

Arizona Sunshine's main weaknesses at the time was the sometimes repetitive level design. All in all, it was a must-have for VR shooter fans. Meanwhile, the zombie shooting gallery is getting on in years. A look at the second part in particular shows this.

With Arizona Sunshine 2, Vertigo Games delivered an excellent successor in 2023. The sequel impressed in our test with a solid shooting system, varied levels and, above all, Buddy the dog, one of the best animal companions in video game history. A gripping story, bawdy humor, and a believable apocalyptic world make Arizona Sunshine 2 a VR highlight of 2023.
