The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the use of the 6 GHz frequency band for wireless devices. As reported by The Verge and Bloomberg, companies such as Microsoft, Google, Apple, Meta, and Qualcomm had already applied to the FCC in 2019 for access to the 6 GHz band, which had previously only been open to mobile and utility companies.

Important for mobile use of VR, AR, and smart glasses

The rule proposed by FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel now allows Very Low Power (VLP) devices to operate in the 850 MHz band, as requested by technology companies. This includes mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and VR and AR headsets.

The signals will be restricted to a short range, such as within a room, to avoid interference with licensed uses. In addition, devices in geo-blocked areas could be operated at higher power.

These short distances are particularly important for mobile VR and AR headsets, or data and display glasses such as the Xreal Air 2. When used on the move in a car or train, they will benefit from faster Wi-Fi tethering, currently for example via a smartphone's 5G connection or another hotspot.
