Horizon Call of the Mountain: New quality level for VR games?
Will the PSVR 2 game Horizon Call of the Mountain bring a new level of quality to VR games? An ex-developer of the studio is convinced.
Chris James worked as a senior world designer for Guerrilla's upcoming blockbuster Horizon Forbidden West for three years. So he's not entirely unbiased when it comes to commenting on projects from his old employer. His tweet about the freshly announced game Horizon Call of the Mountain for Playstation VR 2 might nevertheless provide a little insight into the development status.
On Wednesday, Sony announced an exclusive Horizon spin-off for PSVR 2. It will not be developed by series creator Guerilla Games, but by Firesprite. This team already provided successful horror in space in the roguelite The Persistence - first in virtual reality and later for conventional screens. In 2021, the VR experts from Firesprite were taken over by Sony.
Horizon Call of the Mountain: Development well advanced?
Since Chris James was once so centrally involved in the series, he should at least have a more in-depth insight into the background of the development. According to his tweet, work on the game has been going on for quite some time. In a reply to moderator Geoff Keighley, he explained on Twitter:
"This has been in development for a while. I haven't worked on it, but I promise you it will change what AAA means for VR. It's amazing!"
This is been in the works for a while.

So unlike some other major VR game projects, Horizon Call of the Mountain could be closer to completion - and may even be released at the launch of Sony's new VR glasses.
Ubisoft, for example, is planning two virtual reality games for major series. However, after an announcement of the VR offshoots for Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell, there was no further information about the titles. A large world is generally likely for Ubisoft games.
Although Horizon Call of the Mountain has been in development for a long time according to James, there was little information and hardly any gameplay footage to be seen at the announcement. A teaser video provides a brief glimpse of the game, which is experienced from the first-person perspective in typical VR fashion and revolves around a new main character.
Horizon in VR: Familiar series, new storyline
VR players will not take on the role of title heroine Aloy like in Horizon Zero Dawn or Horizon Forbidden West (coming out on February 18 for PS4 and PS5). However, players will meet the warrior and other familiar characters. There is no word yet on when the action-adventure or PSVR 2 will be released. Tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects the market launch of the PSVR 2 in the second quarter of 2022.
