Google Maps becomes more immersive and gets an AR upgrade
At Search On 2022, Google announced improvements to Google Maps that will please 3D and AR fans.
In July, Google introduced Immersive View at its own development conference I/O. The feature displays certain city areas as interactive and elaborately rendered 3D models.
AR badges display important information like current weather and traffic volume. But that's not all. Maps users can virtually walk down streets and, in some cases, even visit pubs and restaurants.
New immersive 3D views
The immersive perspective is computer generated. Google uses neural rendering to combine satellite and Street View images. Thanks to Google Cloud, the elaborate 3D renderings are available on any smartphone.
At Search On, Google announced the launch of 250 new photorealistic 3D views, focusing on landmarks such as Tokyo Tower, the Acropolis in Athens, and the Empire State Building. The following video shows the new 3D models.
Immersive View is rolling out in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo over the next few months supporting both Android and iOS devices.
Live View upgrade: Search Google Maps with AR.
Google also announced an upgrade to Live View. This augmented reality feature activates the smartphone's camera view and embeds digital navigation elements such as arrows and signs correctly in perspective in the environment, making it easier to find your destination.
With the feature extension Search with Live View, it is now possible to search specifically for ATMs, coffee shops, or grocery stores. AR badges then mark the locations in Live View. If required, Live View displays further details such as opening hours and services offered. The video above illustrates this.
The feature, like the new 3D views, is rolling out in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo for Android and iOS devices in the coming months.
