"All on Board" brings board game nights to virtual reality
On the VR platform All on Board you will be able to play licensed board games or create your own. A Kickstarter is currently running.
Board games work well in virtual reality. They don't require artificial locomotion, have natural hand controls, and create a sense of togetherness that virtual reality captures very well.
Still, there are only a few VR board games. Catan VR, Chess Club, and Demeo (review) immediately come to mind.
All on Board wants to change that and offer players a platform where they play licensed board games or design, share and modify games themselves. The platform supports Meta Quest 1 & 2 via native app and PC VR via Steam.
All on Board: 12 games for launch plus mod construction kit
The studio already licensed the following games:
- Nova Aetas Black Rose Wars
- Escape the Dark Castle
- Rallyman GT
- Sword & Sorcery
- Infinity Defiance
- Istanbul
- SteamWatchers
- Hamlet
Four more titles are yet to be revealed. As in real life, only one person in the group needs to have purchased a board game for everyone to play it.
All on Board offers private game rooms as well as a matchmaking system with crossplay functionality across all supported VR platforms. Players without VR headsets participate with a free smartphone app, though they cannot create avatars.
The studio also promises an easy-to-use game editor. The PC program supposedly allows users to create and share their own games without any programming knowledge.
Kickstarter still runs for two weeks
Currently, a crowdfunding campaign running on Kickstarter already reached its funding goal. Currently, the team has collected more than $43,000. It's not too late to support the project starting as low as $20.
An alpha test is scheduled to start at the end of 2022, followed by a beta test in the spring. Both are reserved for Early Access backers (starting at $40). The VR platform is scheduled for release at the end of 2023.
All on Board is being developed by the Spanish studio The Game Kitchen. The developers are responsible for the Metroidvania game Blasphemous (2019), which has sold more than one million copies worldwide.
