Meta Quest 2: Meta promises big games and more
At the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, Meta plans to announce new VR games for Quest 2. What can we expect?
The gaming event is taking place for the second year in a row, but under a new name. In 2021, the event was called Oculus Gaming Showcase.
The focus is on gaming content, and Meta Quest 2 is in dire need of it. Since Resident Evil 4, no major title has been released for the VR headset, and there have hardly been any gaming highlights in the last few months.
Meta needs to deliver and remind Quest 2 buyers why they bought the VR headset for Christmas or why they should get it out of the cupboard again.
The long wait for big VR hits
Meta promises new game announcements, first gameplay previews, updates on games coming out next year, and a whole lot of surprises.
The Meta Connect 2021 was disappointing in this respect. Besides Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, of which there was no image or video material to be seen, only the Quest port of the PC VR game Blade & Sorcery was announced.
Last year's Oculus Gaming Showcase also brought little that was exciting. Only Carve Snowboarding was new and most announcements were content updates for existing VR games.
Michael Doran, head of production at Oculus Studios, praised Meta's game plans last year. He was sure that the upcoming games would surprise and excite even the biggest skeptics, Doran wrote on Reddit.
Large VR games easily take three years of development time or even more. If we assume that Meta has pumped a billion or more into the content ecosystem in the summer of 2019, we should see the first fruits of these efforts in 2022.
Meta Quest Gaming Showcase: what to expect
Meta has to prove with these upcoming projects that big, deep and long games are possible on Quest 2. The open-world title GTA: San Andreas could technically demonstrate this.
Meta is well positioned: The company has acquired a number of high-profile game studios and commissioned VR games from Ubisoft, such as Assassin's Creed VR and Splinter Cell VR, which we hope to finally see something of. The corresponding announcement came a year and a half ago.
The success of Resident Evil 4 and the positive reactions to GTA: San Andreas should motivate Meta to port more classics to Quest 2. The effort would be relatively low and the fans' joy guaranteed.
There might also be updates on the four new, unannounced titles from Vertigo Games (Arizona Sunshine, After The Fall), which are to be released for the VR headset, but also on other devices.
The Meta Quest Gaming Showcase will take place on April 20, 2022. You can watch the event live on Facebook, Youtube, Twitch and Oculus TV.
