Table Troopers brings the charm of Worms into your living room

Table Troopers is an upcoming multiplayer title for Meta Quest that brings the familiar Worms gameplay to mixed reality.
Like the 30-year-old series, Table Troopers combines turn-based tactical gameplay with physics-based action and a destructible environment. All with mixed reality, co-presence, and the social nature of tabletop gaming.
Combat takes place on a circular, rotatable battlefield around which players gather. The game can be controlled using either hand tracking or VR controllers.
When it's completed, Table Troopers will feature a single-player campaign, multiplayer mode for up to four players, and co-op missions. More than 25 weapons and tools and different biomes will add tactical depth.
A teaser presented at GDC (see below) shows early video footage, demonstrating a range of weapons, air strikes, destructible environments, and hand controls.

Meet the studio
Table Troopers is being developed by German studio Cosmorama, which was founded last summer by Sven Otto and Fabian Knauer. The studio is based in Pinneberg, Hamburg.
The MR game is one of 21 titles being funded by Meta as part of a relatively new VR start-up funding program.
"We've been VR enthusiasts since the first devkit, and through the Oculus Publishing Ignition program we had the chance to finally develop a game we wanted to make on the platform but hadn't found yet. We founded Cosmorama to extend our years of experience in mobile game development to the XR standalone devices and to build a studio that can grow with this market," writes Fabian Knauer in an email to MIXED.
Knauer and Otto have always been big fans of the Worms series, but the idea for a tabletop MR game came from another title.
"The main inspiration for Table Troopers originally came from the game Demeo. We were impressed by the feel of the game, but we wanted to create a game that was more accessible than an RPG with a large set of rules. So we came up with the idea of making a tabletop game that is physically simulated, rather than played like a classic board game."
Their goal is to bring the familiar Worms experience of playing with friends in front of the TV to a new, more immersive platform.
"When we tried Quest 3 with color passthrough and hand tracking, we knew we wanted to create a mixed reality game where you could gather your friends around a table in your living room and chat and play together. It's important to us to make a game that's built from the ground up for XR and takes full advantage of the platform," writes Knauer.
Local multiplayer with multiple headsets in the same room and synchronization of the battlefield will not be supported when the game launches into early access in Q2, but will be implemented by the time the game is finished later this year. This would be a big plus for Table Troopers, as there are currently only a handful of MR games that offer local multiplayer.
What are the studio's hopes for Table Troopers?
"We see a trend that the XR market and headsets are becoming more and more attractive to casual gamers, and we want to continue to provide them with games in the future. If Table Troopers is well received, we can see ourselves developing more games on our 'table platform'".
