FACTS

Backers of the 2017 Kickstarter campaign have been informed in an update that Titanic VR is coming to Meta Quest 3 and 3S.

"It’s been eight years since you helped bring Titanic VR to life, and I’m thrilled to share that we’re now putting the finishing touches on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S version," writes studio CEO David Whelan.

An official announcement has yet to be made, but a Horizon Store page is said to follow shortly.

The VR studio is currently looking for 20 beta testers from the ranks of Kickstarter backers. All backers will receive a free download key for the upcoming Quest version in the coming weeks as a thank you for their financial support.

"It’s amazing how far standalone VR has come. Where once you needed a powerful gaming PC, you can now fully explore the Titanic shipwreck from anywhere on your Quest 3 or 3s. We’ve worked through countless challenges to make this port run and we can’t wait for you to experience it," writes Whelan.

CONTEXT

Titanic VR: An early PC VR highlight

Titanic VR was released for PC VR headsets in August 2018. A version for the first Playstation VR followed in November of the same year.

The VR experience consists of two very different parts: a virtual dive where you can freely explore the wreck and undertake various missions, and a shorter 1912 historical experience where you relive the disaster from the perspective of a survivor. It has not yet been confirmed if the Quest 3 version will include the historical experience.

In the more expansive first part, you take on the role of Dr. Ethan Lynch, a marine archaeologist who travels by submarine to the wreck of the Titanic to investigate unresolved questions surrounding the sunken ship.

Titanic VR was developed by Immersive VR Education, who used virtual reality to bring historical events to life. Prior to Titanic VR, the studio made a name for itself with Apollo 11 VR. The company was later renamed Engage XR and strategically repositioned.
