Rockstar acquires GTA San Andreas VR developer - but don't get your hopes up

Rockstar Games has acquired the Australian studio Video Games Deluxe, which previously worked on GTA San Andreas VR. But this acquisition might actually spell the end for the troubled VR project.
Rockstar just announced they're buying Sydney-based Video Games Deluxe and rebranding it as Rockstar Australia. The studio has quite a history with Rockstar, having collaborated on LA Noire and its VR spinoff, The VR Case Files, as well as Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition.
What's interesting is what Rockstar left out of their press release: Video Games Deluxe was the team behind GTA: San Andreas VR, which Meta announced for Quest back in October 2021 but never delivered.
A rocky road for San Andreas VR
The saga of GTA: San Andreas VR has been nothing short of frustrating for fans. After years of silence, the first hint of life came in July 2024, when Meta's official account responded to a fan question on a Racket Club YouTube video. They confirmed they were still working on it, but had no release date. That comment mysteriously vanished shortly after.
The other shoe dropped in August when Meta told IGN they'd put development on hold indefinitely. Their explanation? They wanted to redirect resources to other projects, though they made sure to add they were "looking forward to working with Rockstar in the future."
Let San Andreas VR finally rest in peace
While Meta hasn't officially killed GTA San Andreas VR, reading between the lines of this acquisition makes things pretty clear. Rockstar's purchase of Video Games Deluxe looks more like a practical move to add another support studio for their main projects, rather than any kind of VR rescue mission.
The fact that Rockstar's press release completely omits any mention of San Andreas VR speaks volumes. VR just isn't where the money is for Rockstar right now, and this acquisition likely marks the quiet end of what could have been an interesting chapter in GTA history.
