What does the Quest APK Installer do?
The Quest APK Installer is a 2D application for Meta Quest that scans your headset for APKs, lists them, and installs them at the touch of a button without the need for a PC. The APKs themselves can be downloaded using the Quest Browser. The tool is therefore a native option for sideloading on Meta Quest, i.e. installing apps that are not from the Horizon Store.
What does the acronym APK stand for? APK (Android Package Kit) is the file format used to install apps on Android devices and Meta Quest. In the context of this article, I refer to APKs as installation files for apps that run on Meta Quest. These can be immersive apps or Android apps that run in a 2D window.
The most common way to install APKs on Meta Quest is through Sidequest. To install APKs on Meta Quest that are not available through Sidequest, you need a PC or special tools that do the job without a PC. Since the latter tools can be cumbersome to use, and currently do not work properly due to a firmware bug in the v74 update, Anagan79 has developed his own easy-to-use tool: the Quest APK Installer, which, as mentioned above, automatically searches for APKs on your headset, lists them, and installs them at the touch of a button.
The tool can install both APKs and the more complex XAPKs.
And what does it ultimately do for me?
The most obvious use case for the tool is that you can download and easily install APKs and XAPKs from the Internet while using the headset and without the need for a PC.
I have downloaded and installed Android apps like Spotify, Discord, Firefox and X on Meta Quest in just a few minutes. All I needed was the Quest browser and the Quest APK Installer.
If you want to try this yourself, make sure you download the (X)APKs from safe sources. It should also be noted that Meta Quest only runs Android apps that do not use Google Play Services. Gmail, Google Maps and many other Android apps will not work.

Since the Quest APK installer is itself based on an APK, installation via Sidequest is required.
