Location-based Sandbox VR crosses $200 million in lifetime ticket sales

Sandbox VR reaches an impressive revenue milestone and opens its first franchise in Berlin, Germany.
Sandbox VR CEO Steve Zhao announced on X that his company has surpassed $200 million in lifetime ticket sales. He also announced that the in-house studio is now developing content in the cultural learning category.
"Your local Sandbox VR will not just be a virtual manifestation of the movies, escape rooms, but also museums, zoos, and cultural destinations," Zhao writes. So far, Sandbox VR has only developed games.
In a blog post, Zhao describes his vision of social, free-roaming, full-body tracked virtual reality, which is only possible in VR arcades like Sandbox VR due to the space and technology required.
"Along with VR headsets, players wear multiple sensors on their wrists, ankles, chest, and head, enabling precise full-body tracking. This allows people to feel as though they are physically present with one another in the same space. It’s not yet The Matrix, but it’s getting ever closer."
Zhao wants to use this kind of technology to revolutionize education. VR could one day offer immersive educational experiences, such as floating in zero gravity aboard the ISS, observing extinct species in their habitats, or witnessing historical events like America’s founding.
Sandbox VR operates more than 50 locations worldwide, with 30 new franchises planned for 2025 alone. The first of these opened a few days ago in Berlin's East Side Mall.
The company recently raised an additional $7 million in investment, which will be used for innovation and content development. The latter includes a second project with a Netflix IP called Rebel Moon: The Descent. The first project is Squid Virtuals, a Sandbox VR version of The Squid Game, which turned out to be a big hit.
