Students & teachers can rent Snap Spectacles 5 at half price
College and university students and faculty can rent the advanced AR glasses Snap Spectacles at half price.
The company is now offering a discounted subscription to the AR glasses for educational use. Representatives of an accredited educational institution can apply for a monthly subscription at a 50 percent discount.
In Europe, the price is 55 euros per month. Since the minimum term is 12 months, the cost for the first year is at least 660 euros. In the U.S., the price is $49.50 per month, or $594 for the first year.
The offer is available in all countries where Spectacles are available, including the US, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria and the Netherlands. Interested parties must register for the Spectacles Developer Program using their educational institution's email address.
Snap has been renting Spectacles 5 since last fall. Because the AR glasses are a developer kit, they are only rented to developers, not sold as a product.
Spectacles 5 is a standalone wearable that does not require an external compute. Weighing 226 grams, the AR glasses feature four tracking cameras and a Snap-developed optical system with LCoS microprojectors. The field of view is 46 degrees with a resolution of 37 pixels per degree. The AR glasses display has a brightness of 2000 nits, with electrochromatic lenses for dimming. It also enables multiplayer AR experiences where multiple glasses wearers can interact with virtual content together.
