Vertigo Games sells its VR arcade platform
The studio behind Metro Awakening is surprisingly parting ways with SpringboardVR. The leading VR arcade platform goes to competitor SynthesisVR.
Vertigo Games is selling the VR arcade platform SpringboardVR, which it acquired in 2021, to SynthesisVR. The acquisition will take effect on February 1, 2025, as announced by both companies. They have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
Both platforms will initially continue to operate independently of each other. The new owner Deploy Reality wants to create a future-proof foundation for arcade operators and developers.
"With this transition, we are setting a course for the future," explains Vertigo Games CEO Richard Stitselaar. "We can focus on content innovation and creativity while SynthesisVR drives platform development." Vertigo Games intends to continue developing VR arcade experiences alongside games for home use.
From acquisition to sale
When Vertigo Games acquired SpringboardVR four years ago, the studio was still talking about an "exciting phase of accelerated growth in VR".
At the time, SpringboardVR was considered the leading content platform for VR arcades. Operators could choose from more than 400 VR titles and use them via subscription. Founded in 2017, the company served over 500 customers in more than 40 countries.
While the VR industry was clearly on the upswing in 2021 and 2022, it currently seems to be on somewhat shaky ground. There is currently a wave of layoffs at VR studios. The sale of SpringboardVR could be related to this.
