This VR room is straight out of my childhood's dreams
A gamer has created a space that condenses the childhood feeling of the early 90s. And you can visit it.
The room is sure to make the hearts of kids from the late 80's and early 90's beat faster, as it is packed with cultural artifacts from that era. Tables and cabinets are stacked with game consoles like the SNES and Sega Genesis, as well as early handhelds like the Gameboy and Sega Game Gear. There is also a boom box and a Discman.
Movie posters from Batman and Back to the Future adorn the walls. The cartoon series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is playing on an old TV, and there is a toy He-Man figure on the floor next to Castle Grayskull, which I wanted so badly as kid.
My childhood room looked much more modest, but pretty much everything that fascinated me back then is concentrated here. And the best part of the whole story is that you can visit the room in virtual reality, sit in front of the TV or the arcade machines and play the originals. If you own the ROMs, that is.
Created with EmuVR
The room was decorated and filled with these objects by Youtuber Jason Steel. It was a recent post on X (see below) that drew my attention to the room.
The PC VR program EmuVR provides the foundation for his experience, simulating a room complete with consoles and some props from the era. Retroarch is used as the emulator with support for over 70 gaming systems. If you don't have a VR headset, you can also try EmuVR on a monitor. The program also offers a multiplayer mode since the end of 2020.
This is an EmuVR room I downloaded from Jason Steel on YouTube and its just a wonderful setup. All the consoles you can see can be played and even the VHS player, just amazing work and a great way to play retro games pic.twitter.com/66LiItJch9

A lot of time went into Steel's idealized room. The download is almost six gigabytes, and you can find the link to it in the description of his YouTube video (see above).
EmuVR itself hasn't been updated for a while. The last official update is 1.0.11 and is dated December 24, 2022. Installation instructions and other helpful setup information can be found on the official website and the wiki page.
