Trombone Champ: Unflattened gets major update with custom songs on Meta Quest
The VR rhythm game Trombone Champ: Unflattened just received a substantial free update, adding a winter environment, custom song support for Meta Quest, and new instruments. The game is also on sale for the first time since its release.
Flat2VR Studios' latest update, called "New Environment, Custom Songs+," brings several exciting additions to the game. Players can now enjoy a winter outdoor setting - the game's first alternative environment, which sets the stage for more open-air levels to come. Quest users can now add their own music by scanning a download folder, with setup help available from store owner George.
The update also introduces four new trombones: Bean Trombone, Koi Fish, Chinese Red Envelope, and Unicorn Horns. Players struggling to hit the right notes can use the new Pitch Assist mode without affecting their scores. The renamed "Unflattened" mode (previously called "Simplified") optimizes songs for VR, often making them more challenging.
For the first time, the game is on sale across platforms. Steam users can get it for $13.49 (10% off) until January 27, while Meta Quest Store shoppers can grab it for $12.99.
A fresh take on a popular Indie game
Trombone Champ: Unflattened brings the beloved 2D rhythm game into VR, marking one of the first projects from Flat2VR, a studio founded in March 2023 focused on bringing popular games to virtual reality.
The gameplay is straightforward but engaging: players move a virtual trombone's slide back and forth to hit notes as they fly toward them in sync with the music. When played correctly (or not), the result is a musical performance that ranges from harmonious to hilariously off-key.
The VR version feels like it was built specifically for the platform, with smooth controls and careful attention to detail. Players can experience Trombone Champ: Unflattened on Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest 2, PC-VR via Steam, and PlayStation VR 2.
