RUMORS

VR enthusiast and leaker Luna claims to have heard the first details about the upcoming ASUS headset.

The headset is being developed under the codename Tarius and is planned to include eye and face tracking. The displays will be QD-LCDs with local dimming (similar to Meta Quest Pro) or OLED microdisplays (similar to Apple Vision Pro).

CONTEXT

What is Horizon OS and why is this important?

Meta announced in April 2024 that it would license the Meta Quest operating system, called Horizon OS, to select hardware partners to develop specialized VR headsets.

Meta named two partners at the time: ASUS and Lenovo. While Lenovo is working on a mixed reality device for productivity, learning and entertainment, Meta said ASUS is focusing on a "performance gaming headset" under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand. The co-CEO of ASUS promised "a gaming headset of the next generation".

Nothing official has been heard about these projects since Meta's announcement.

If the rumors are true, the ASUS headset is likely to be much more expensive than the Meta Quest 3, especially if it uses OLED microdisplays. The price of such a headset is expected to be over $1,000, limiting its market reach. It could be the first Horizon OS headset since Meta Quest Pro to offer face and eye tracking. Work on a Meta Quest Pro 2 prototype was reportedly put on hold last year.

It is completely unclear when the ASUS headset will be released and whether it is planned for the current Quest generation or the next one. In April 2024, Mark Zuckerberg said that it will "probably take a couple of years" before the first Horizon OS headsets from hardware partners hit the market. Meta Quest 4 is reportedly planned for late 2026.
