Meta Quest frustration: Software update renders VR headsets unusable
Numerous Meta Quest headsets are defective after failed updates. The company is confirming a software problem.
Meta has confirmed a software update problem after frustrated Quest owners reported their VR headsets failing during an update. The affected models are the Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S.
Meta addresses the issue on their website as follows:
"We are currently experiencing a software update issue and are working to resolve it as soon as possible. In the meantime, please try booting up your headset while holding down the power button for 45 seconds before releasing it."
Forums fill with complaints
UploadVR had previously compiled reports on Reddit and in Meta's own forums. According to users, the problem is particularly common with older headsets that have not been used for a long time. Attempting to update the firmware to the latest version renders the devices unusable.
The Quest 2 appears in the reports more often than the Quest 3. Some users report that Meta is offering them a refurbished unit for $150 as the cheapest replacement option since their headsets are no longer under warranty.
Next issue with Quest headsets
Since this seems to be a software issue, Meta should be able to fix it soon. More problematic, however, is the following design flaw: MIXED recently reported a sweat problem with Quest headsets.
According to numerous reports in the Meta community forums and on Reddit, intensive fitness sessions with the Meta Quest 3 are increasingly leading to total failure of the VR headset. Users of fitness apps like Supernatural, Les Mills XR Bodycombat or Eleven Table Tennis are particularly affected.
The symptoms of failure are similar: head and controller tracking fail, headsets fail to start properly or get stuck in the boot loop. In some cases, charging stops working as well. One particularly dramatic case illustrates the extent of the problem: a user had to replace his headset four times in four months.
Meta replaces the defective units free of charge, but usually only with refurbished replacements. A technical solution, such as better sealing of the electronics like in smartphones, is not yet available.
