Hyperrealistic VR spaces: Meta is already testing the next steps
Meta's hyperrealistic VR spaces are impressive. The company is currently testing how users can create their own 3D room scans.
A few months ago, Meta introduced Hyperscapes, a technology that enables walk-through, hyperrealistic duplicates of real-world environments for Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Meta uses Gaussian Splatting and cloud streaming to deliver this type of experience.
The corresponding tech demo is now available outside of the US, but requires a good internet connection.
VR enthusiast Luna has found clues in code strings as to what Meta plans to do next with Hyperscapes. Apparently, some Meta employees are currently testing how users can create their own room scans, probably by using a smartphone app.
The technology still needs to mature, as the scans can take up to eight hours to process, according to a string of code.
New strings in the Meta Horizon mobile app suggest that Meta may open Hyperscape scanning to users in the future. It seems this is being tested with internal dogfooders first. pic.twitter.com/bqUhLyJNki

Meta is also apparently testing co-location for the space scans, which would allow multiple people in the same location to visit a hyperscape together. Other code suggests that you will eventually be able to use the hyperscapes in Horizon Worlds or as a starting environment.
Hyperscapes could become a building block of Meta's Metaverse
Meta hinted at the introduction of Hyperscapes that you will one day be able to scan rooms yourself.
In an interview with Kent Bye, Marcello Typrin, Product Manager at Reality Labs, said about Meta's plans:
"Our vision is that in time, you'd be able to scan your own home, invite your friends over, and your friends don't have to live next door to you physically. They could be halfway around the world. And that's really what this is about. It's about creating experiences in places that are meaningful to you, [...] with the people who mean something to you. And we think that's a pretty powerful concept."
Don't miss out: Win VR games, accessories, or hardware every day on the MIXED Advent Calendar, which runs through December 2024.
Typrin also said that Meta likes the idea of combining Hyperscapes with Horizon Worlds:
"What we really like is the idea of bringing places that are magical and fantastical and only exist in a digital world with places that are existent in the physical world and bringing them next to each other and creating experiences where you can move from one to another in a way that feels very comfortable and natural."
