LEAK

According to a leak from the well-known chipshell user “zhongzhonghao”, the RX 8800 XT will be the new flagship of AMD's upcoming RDNA 4 generation. AMD is planning to move away from the absolute high-end segment, which is why no RX-8900 series will be released. Instead, the focus will be on the segment below the top models, in which the RX 8800 XT will play a leading role.

The leak promises a significant improvement in ray tracing performance. In “mainstream games”, the RX 8800 XT should be able to keep up with the RTX 4080 (Super). Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is cited as an example, where the new GPU is said to achieve an impressive 45 percent increase in performance compared to the previous generation RX 7900 XTX. This significant leap in ray tracing performance could put AMD in a much better position than its competitor Nvidia.

Less power consumption as an incentive to buy

Another interesting aspect is the power consumption. Compared to the RX 7900 XTX, power consumption is said to be around 25 percent lower. This corresponds to a TDP of around 270 watts. This increase in efficiency is an important step towards making high-performance graphics cards attractive to users who value lower energy consumption. AMD seems to have found the right balance between performance and efficiency here.

However, there is also a warning. Another chipshell user claims that the performance of the RX 7900 XT is the real target for the RX 8800 XT. Whether this statement refers to rasterization or ray tracing performance is not clear from the short statement. It remains to be seen how the actual performance of the new AMD GPU will develop in comparison to the previous generation and the competition from Nvidia.

EXPECTED FEATURES

Improved ray tracing and lower power consumption

The most important expected features of the RX 8800 XT from the leak at a glance:

  • Improved ray tracing performance: The GPU should be able to compete with the RTX 4080 in mainstream games.
  • Increased efficiency: With lower power consumption compared to the RX 7900 XTX, the RX 8800 XT promises more economical operation.
  • New market segment: AMD is deliberately positioning itself below the absolute high-end range with the RDNA 4 generation and could therefore offer an interesting option for users who are looking for a powerful GPU without going into the most expensive segment.
OPINION

Things are getting exciting on the GPU market

The coming weeks and months promise exciting innovations on the GPU market. In addition to AMD, Intel will also introduce new graphics cards with the Battlemage series and Nvidia with the RTX 5000 generation.

It will be particularly exciting to see how AMD's RX 8800 XT will fare in a direct comparison with competing products. If the leaks are confirmed, AMD could score points with strong ray tracing performance and lower power consumption and position itself as an attractive alternative to Nvidia's offerings.
