FACTS

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2, you can still get the PC classic, including Episodes One and Two, for free on Steam. The offer is only valid until November 18th at 10am (depending on your time zone), so hurry!

If you own the game, you can experience Half-Life 2 in glorious VR. This is made possible by the VR conversion Half-Life 2: VR Mod (Steam link), which was released in 2022 with Valve's blessing. Since it also supports Episode One and Episode Two, you can play those expansions in VR as well.

And while we're at it, we'd like to bring your attention to two other VR-related offers that are valid through November 22, 2024:

  • The original Half-Life (Steam link) temporarily costs less than $1. If you own the game, you can play through the classic on Meta Quest without a PC thanks to the excellent VR mod Lambda1VR.
  • Half-Life: Alyx (Steam link) is temporarily discounted by 60 percent and costs $20.

The best entry-level option for standalone VR and PC VR is currently Meta Quest 3S for $300.

CONTEXT

Half-Life 2 is even better in virtual reality

Half-Life 2 VR is a shining example of fan modding and one of the best VR conversions of flat titles yet. Lead developer Holger "Cabalistic" Frydrych and his team have done an exceptional job of adapting the game to the requirements of virtual reality. This includes a new weapon selection menu, settings for artificial locomotion, and even the ability to interact with weapons.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2, Valve has released a major update for the game. Please note that the changes and improvements are not included in the VR mod, but must first be implemented by its team (link to X-post). It is not known if and when this might happen.
