Youtube co-watching allows you to watch Youtube with friends in Horizon Home or in the passthrough mode of Meta Quest.

I tried out the co-watching in October with my friend Christian Steiner. Our conclusion at the time:

"Overall, we liked the YouTube co-watching experience. It is easy to get together in VR and watch YouTube in excellent quality. YouTube co-watching is another valuable Quest feature, and we look forward to seeing how it improves."

New details about Youtube co-watching

In the Quest blog, Meta reveals a few details that were not yet known or confirmed:

  • You can invite up to 7 friends.
  • You have to follow each other for the invitation to work.
  • "For now" (!) only 2D content is supported, which sounds like support for immersive formats may come later.
  • In order to watch paid content, all participants must have paid for it or own it.
  • Youtube Co-Watch is still in beta at launch.

The maximum resolution for content played is still unconfirmed. We were able to watch 4K content in our hands-on.
