Vendetta Forever on Quest 3: sweat-inducing movie scene shooter
Bullet-time shooting and lots of chaos — Vendetta Forever catapults you into cinematic action scenes. MIXED has tested the wacky VR shooter.
Would you sometimes like to dive into an action movie and take on the lead role? Then you should definitely take a look at Vendetta Forever. The new VR shooter from MeatSpace Interactive and nDreams catapults you into hectic shooting scenarios. I played the title extensively at Quest 3 and can tell you what you can expect.
Shoot, teleport, think
The game principle of Vendetta Forever can be summarized in three words: “LO-KILL-MOTION”. What does that mean? It's simple: you kill an enemy, grab their dropped weapon and teleport directly to their position. You then rush through the levels at breathtaking speed, always on the lookout for the next gun and the next target. Sounds simple, but it's not at all, especially at the beginning.
Especially in my first few rounds, I still had a few problems getting the sequence of shooting, teleporting and keeping an overview right. Bullets or knives landed in my face more often than I would have liked. After a while, the gameplay became second nature to me. The level of difficulty here is definitely due to the speed, which I'm not necessarily used to from titles like Superhot VR.
A crazy tour through movie history
The developers have put significant effort into designing the levels. In one mission, I race down a spiral staircase while keeping an eye out for enemies. Shortly afterward, I find myself in the iconic lobby shootout from The Matrix. And then I'm suddenly transported to a saloon in the Wild West, where a duel awaits me. Each of these scenes is bursting with creative ideas and loving allusions to action cinema classics.
Speaking of weapons: Pistols are just the beginning. As the game progresses, I shoot around with Uzis and a rocket launcher. When I get my hands on a katana, things get really brutal. I teleport from one enemy to the next and mow them down as I dash past. Thanks to the clever level architecture, boredom never sets in despite the unusual movement system.
Less is more
My personal highlights are two levels that take place entirely in the dark. Here, enemies only become visible when they make noises — be it through gunshots or footsteps. Those who fire themselves are revealed by the muzzle flash. So you have to: Grab your weapon, teleport to cover and throw the gun against the wall. The opponents will reflexively shoot at the source of the noise, revealing their position. I would like to see more VR games with simple but clever ideas like this.
Graphically, Vendetta Forever is wonderfully minimalist. The minimalist comic look fits perfectly with the hectic gameplay and ensures that you always have an overview. Only occasional aliasing on the Quest 3 tarnishes the otherwise flawless impression a little. The sound is outstanding: booming shots, booming explosions and the driving electro soundtrack ensured that I was fully immersed in the action.
Conclusion: Vendetta Forever delivers pure action
After a few hours with the full version of Vendetta Forever, I can say: MeatSpace Interactive and nDreams have delivered an action game that is as well-rounded as it is fast-paced. The levels are full to the brim with crazy ideas and offer a high replay value thanks to online leaderboards and modifiers. Graphically, the comic look may take some getting used to, but it still fits the game perfectly. The controls and weapons work wonderfully, but if you hate teleportation as a method of transportation, Vendetta Forever may not be the right title for you.
If you're looking for a sweaty, chaotic shooter, you'll have a blast with Vendetta Forever. I definitely enjoyed my time with this wonderfully over-the-top action firework.
