Meta Quest's best VR travel app now offers dynamic skies and star constellations
Brink Traveler for Meta Quest has been enhanced with animated clouds and a more accurate starry sky.
Brink Traveler features lifelike reconstructions of real-world landmarks and sights, offering some of the most beautiful VR environments in Meta Quest.
What was missing was a dynamic sky, and the latest update to Brink Traveler delivers just that with animated clouds and a new starry sky with optional constellations.
"Now every location in the app features flow-mapped skies to gently animate clouds and further bring scenes to life. It really adds a lot to the immersion - especially in some of the more extreme mountain-top locations like Lone Pine Peak!" writes developer Akin Bilgic in an email to MIXED.
"Also, the night sky has been completely redone to be physically-accurate based on the in-app location and date of the 3D scan - so the stars you see in night mode are precisely what you'd see in real life - down to their intensity, color temperature, and orientation."
Another new feature is the ability to display constellations and star names at the touch of the Gruip button. The app can display all 88 modern constellations.
I tried the new update with Quest 3. The clouds move much slower in the video, so their effect is more subtle. I also liked the constellations, which can be faded in and out at any time, making it easier to memorize the constellations. The night sky now looks sharper to me and is different at every location. Sometimes there are more stars, sometimes fewer. This adds to the immersion.
The developers have also increased the resolution in Quest 3S and have made a number of improvements to the destinations.

What is Brink Traveler?
Brink Traveler uses photogrammetry to create lifelike duplicates of real places. High-resolution aerial images from drones are combined with ground-based images from tripod cameras.
The VR application currently offers 44 3D environments with a movement radius of a few meters. Although it is not possible to go hiking or the like, the VR application is ideal for relaxation or meditation, which is why it is now being used in therapy.
In my review of Brink Traveler, I wrote that it has never been easier or more fun to visit unique places in virtual reality.
The VR app is regularly updated with new content and features for free. Since its launch three years ago, numerous new destinations and a AI travel guide have been added. The most recent content update added environments from the Turkish region of Cappadocia.
