Quest 3: Expert combines Microsoft Flight Simulator with a real cockpit to create an impressive Mixed Reality flight simulation
Heritage Flight Simulation unveils new Mixed Reality experience that seamlessly connects a physical Spitfire cockpit to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.
Heritage Flight Simulation has unveiled a new mixed reality solution that connects a physical Spitfire cockpit to the VR environment of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. As demonstrated in a video, the system uses the pass-through feature of Meta Quest 3 in combination with Virtual Desktop.
According to Heritage Flight Simulation, the cockpit interior has been specially adapted for the pass-through display. The system displays the physical cockpit through the pass-through, while the flight simulator's virtual instrument panel remains visible.
The development was done in cooperation with FlyingIron Simulations, who optimized the virtual 3D model of the Spitfire for integration. Special care was taken to ensure that the positions of the instruments and controls were exactly the same as in the physical cockpit.
From Vision to Reality
Heritage Flight Simulation develops physical cockpit replicas for VR flight simulation. The company, led by Roel Stausebach, focuses on the Spitfire Mk IX. Heritage's system complements modern VR headsets with a haptic cockpit with working controls and force feedback for realistic motion simulation.
The company plans to offer its mixed reality system as a low-cost kit with key components. The Spitfire Mk IX could be followed by other historic aircraft.
The development went through several stages. Initially, the team worked with a small "pass-through portal" that acted like a virtual kneeboard. The current version allows the physical cockpit to be fully integrated into the virtual environment.
Despite some remaining technical limitations — such as the pass-through color showing through slightly at the edges — Heritage Flight Simulation says the result is a significant step forward. The system will also be compatible with the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.
