Snap Spectacles 5 AR glasses launch outside the US
Snap is expanding its Spectacles developer program to six European countries. Developers can now subscribe to the AR glasses for €110 per month.
Snap today announced that the next generation of its Spectacles AR headset is now available in Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain. These are the first markets outside of the US where the AR glasses are available.
The Spectacles Developer Program subscription costs €110 per month with a minimum term of one year. This includes the AR glasses itself and access to the Spectacles Team. According to Snap, shipping will begin in the coming weeks. Other markets will follow in early 2025.
The first AR developers have already received Spectacles at Snap's Lens Fest, which took place after the annual Snap Partner Summit. According to Snap, the AR community worldwide is showing great interest in the headset.
Technically remarkable AR glasses
The fifth generation of Spectacles is a standalone device that does not require a smartphone. Weighing 226 grams, the glasses have four tracking cameras and an optical system developed by Snap using LCoS micro-projectors. The field of view is 46 degrees with a resolution of 37 pixels per degree, which Snap says is equivalent to a 100-inch display from a distance of three meters.
The glasses are powered by two Snapdragon processors and have a battery life of 45 minutes. The new Snap OS is based on hand gestures and voice control, with main menus displayed directly in the palm of the user's hand.
Snap is working with several partners, including OpenAI, ILM, Niantic and Lego, who are developing the first applications for Spectacles. The partnership with OpenAI will enable developers to use AI models in their applications, such as object recognition.
