Quest 3S is bringing in a lot of new Quest users, says Meta
Meta Quest 3S is bringing in the highest share of new Quest users since Quest 2, says Meta's VP of VR.
Mark Rabkin, VP of Meta Quest and Horizon OS, revealed an interesting detail about the market success of Quest 3S over the weekend.
We hear you on this. Helping devs find customers AND monetize is mission critical for us. First key step: grow the total audience. Quest 3S is already doing that, so far it's bringing in the highest share of new-to-Quest users (vs upgraders) since Quest 2. https://t.co/SkRSF4dhLc

Just one sign of success
Rabkin says that the share of people who have never bought a Quest before is the highest it's been since Quest 2, although he doesn't give numbers. Since Quest 2 (2020), Meta has launched the more expensive Quest Pro (2022) and Quest 3 (2023). Unlike the Quest Pro and Quest 3, the Quest 3S is a budget headset that replaces Meta's previous budget headset, the Quest 2.
Most Quest enthusiasts probably upgraded from Quest 2 to Quest 3 last year. In addition, there are a large number of casual users who are potential upgraders. Getting them to upgrade to Quest 3S is at least as important to Meta as attracting new Quest customers. Meta has sold just under 20 million Quest units as of March 2023, with Quest 2 accounting for the lion's share.
In addition to these two tasks (convincing old customers to upgrade and attracting new customers), there is a third: retaining them over the long term, as Rabkin also points out. Only active users spend money in the Quest Store on a regular basis and keep the ecosystem alive. Retention is one of the biggest problems in the VR industry, as many headsets fall out of use after a while. Quest 3 has the highest retention of any Meta headset to date.
