Apple's next headset could be much cheaper thanks to regular OLED displays
Apple is apparently testing regular OLED panels for future Vision headsets to lower the price of the devices.
South Korean website The Elec reports that display manufacturer JDI has sent samples of regular OLED panels with a pixel density of 1,500 PPI to Apple for testing. The Apple Vision Pro uses a different display technology: OLED microdisplays with a pixel density of about 3,400 PPI.
The disadvantages of conventional OLED displays include a lower pixel density and Mura, a disturbing visual pattern that is very noticeable on the Playstation VR 2. The advantages include the fact that they are much lighter and cheaper to produce than OLED microdisplays, which are the biggest cost drivers of the Vision Pro.
According to The Elec, Samsung is also developing a 1,500 PPI OLED panel, although it is unclear whether Apple will actually opt for a display with a significantly lower pixel density than Vision Pro.
According to several reports, Apple will release a cheaper version of the Vision headset as early as 2025, but is struggling to reduce manufacturing costs. The Apple Vision Pro costs $3,500; Apple is said to be targeting a price of $1,500 to $2,000 for the next Vision headset.
