FACTS

Playstation system architect Mark Cerny confirmed to CNET that PSVR 2 will benefit from the PS5 Pro.

The new console "will allow higher-resolution games on the PSVR 2 thanks to the GPU boost and eventually a tuning of Sony's AI upscaling that will work with all VR games", CNET reporter and VR enthusiast Scott Stein writes.

At the time of the PS5 Pro announcement, no VR games were announced that would take advantage of the new console's extra power.

The Playstation 5 Pro will be released on November 7, 2024 and will cost $700.

CONTEXT

What is the PS5 Pro, and how can PSVR 2 games take advantage of it?

Sony Interactive Entertainment today announced the PS5 Pro, which delivers the following performance and graphics upgrades over the PS5.

- Upgraded GPU: The PS5 Pro features a GPU with 67% more processing cores and 28% more memory than the current PS5 console. This results in up to 45% faster rendering speeds.

- Improved Ray Rracing: Enhanced ray tracing provides more dynamic reflections and refractions. Ray tracing is performed at double and sometimes triple the speed of the current PS5 console.

- AI-Driven Upscaling: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is an AI-powered upscaling technology based on machine learning. It ensures razor-sharp picture clarity by adding exceptional detail.

Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can improve the performance of more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 and PS5 games. The PS5 Pro also supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 wireless standard, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and 8K gaming.

PSVR 2 games could benefit from the PS5 Pro in several ways, provided developers deliver visual upgrades:

  • A higher frame rate: Particularly performance-hungry PSVR 2 games use reprojection to artificially double the frame rate. Sony's reprojection technology is controversial, however, as it can cause unwanted visual effects and even nausea. With the PS5 Pro, some titles may be able to avoid reprojection and render natively at a higher frame rate.
  • A higher resolution: Developers could use the power for a higher resolution, making games look much sharper.
  • Better 3D models, textures, and effects: The most elaborate way for developers to use the PS5 Pro would be to improve graphical assets.

PSVR 2 games could theoretically improve in all three areas, but it remains to be seen what improvements will be announced in the coming weeks.
