FACTS

The Raccooniversary Update modernizes and improves the VR game in many ways.

Raccoon Lagoon now features optional teleportation and other customization options, a better way to defend yourself against the mean raccoons (or disable them completely), improved graphics throughout the game, co-op multiplayer for up to 4 players, and many quality of life improvements.

Studio Hidden Path Entertainment has upgraded the game engine and multiplayer system for the update, resulting in improved stability and performance. On the audio-visual side, you’ll notice a lot of new art and character updates and the sound effects and music have been polished too.

You can purchase Raccoon Lagoon for $15 on the Horizon Store.

CONTEXT

A well-deserved comeback

In Raccoon Lagoon, you take on the role of a lonely islander. The small island was once home to a proud tribe that was wiped out by a volcanic eruption. Only remnants of the ancient culture remain.

But help is on the way: a ship full of animals has stranded on the deserted island. They are creatures with special talents: explorers, farmers, fishermen, lumberjacks, miners, cooks, and so on. If you help them, they will help you restore the island to its former glory.

I reviewed Raccoon Lagoon more than five years ago and wrote at the time:

"The tried-and-true gameplay of exploring, collecting, trading, and building works just as well as it does on a monitor, but thanks to virtual reality, these activities take on a tactile quality: I actually feel like an adventurer, farmer, or craftsman working with my own hands. Raccoon Lagoon is a highly addictive game with a high cuteness factor that should appeal to more than just the little ones."

Raccoon Lagoon is the studio's second VR game, after Witchblood, to be given a facelift and a second chance in the mature Quest ecosystem many years after its release. As I recall, Raccoon Lagoon had a number of quirks (looking at you, pesky raccoon bandits!) that should finally be fixed with this update. Well done, Hidden Path!
