FACTS

British developer studio Global Seer Initiative has released the official announcement trailer for its upcoming VR multiplayer game "Leeroy". The title will be released later this year for Meta Quest 3, Quest 2 and Quest Pro, as well as PC VR via Steam.

According to the developer, "Leeroy" promises more than 100 "brilliant, bizarre and baffling" mini-game challenges. These can be played alone or online with up to six people. The game concept is based on constantly changing rules and scenarios, where "nothing makes sense".

Announced mini-games include pelting tomatoes at peasants, rewriting the laws of physics, space cat races, and making coffee for a dog.

The Global Seer Initiative describes "Leeroy" as a combination of high-tech gaming and low-brow humor. Interested players can sign up for beta testing on the game's official Discord server, which is expected to launch in the next few days.

CONTEXT

From Internet meme to VR game

Global Seer Initiative, based in Guildford, UK, claims to be made up of experienced developers. Leeroy is the studio's debut project and was announced a few months ago as a playable internet meme.

The name "Leeroy" is probably a reference to the well-known internet meme Leeroy Jenkins, which stands for chaotic and rash actions — fitting for the game concept described. The meme went viral in 2005 after a player started a completely chaotic fight in World of Warcraft and wildly shouted his own name. Due to the growing popularity of the meme, Blizzard later introduced an official Leeroy Jenkins NPC in World of Warcraft.
